Summers in Ontario are somewhat of a hot commodity, it sometimes comes in short bursts and never lasts long enough. It’s no wonder that when summer’s here, we don’t want to pass up on any chance to lounge out on the backyard deck with a cocktail in hand, enjoying the outdoor view. The last thing you want to be doing on your time off is deck repairs and fixing damages, or finding out it’s structurally unsound.
Maintaining the wood on your deck is an inevitable way to prolong the life of your outdoor space, which can also include the wooden fencing around your home. Here are some helpful tips to ensure your backyard space remains your private oasis and not a big headache:
Inspect The Wood
Regularly inspect the wood for any damage such as moisture buildup, holes, pools of water, and it’s overall structural state. Always be sure to include the ledger boards, support posts, joists under the deck, deck boards, railings and stairs when checking the structure. Be weary as well of small holes in the wood as this may indicate that there’s insect or termite damage.
Do a Cleanup
Always sweep your deck clean of debris such as leaves and branches. These hold moisture and can cause the wood to rot. Make sure you remove any debris that is trapped in between the deck boards as well.
Wash The Deck
Wash and scrub dirt and debris off the deck surface. Don’t let dirt sit on the wood for too long as muddied or heavily soiled areas can cause mildew, mold, and algae. Avoid using steel wool or any harsh bristles as that can damage the wood as well.
Stain The Deck
Consider getting your deck stained and use a sealant to lock in the stain. Not only does it have aesthetic appeal, it will protect the wood and increase its lifespan by making it more resistant to moisture, dirt, and harsh weather. A deck that is regularly treated will look better and outlast an unfinished one.
Protect Against Insects
Staining your deck also helps prevent insect damage. The stain and sealant will make it that much harder for insects to build a home in it.
Unprotected wood decks are prey to rot, mildew, cracks and warping so prevention is essential. If you apply a good quality finish, it will greatly extend the life of the wood and save you money in the long run. If you aren’t sure how to properly maintain your deck before staining it, it is imperative that you get the help of professionals.
