The Four S’s of Spring Backyard Maintenance

Spring is recognized as the best time of the year for outdoor maintenance! There’s good reason why the term “spring cleaning” exists when everyone suddenly begins their indoor cleaning, organizing and remodelling. If you’re wondering what could be done to spruce up your outdoor aesthetic this spring – don’t fret! Just think of the 4 S’s of Maintenance: staining, sealing, seeding, and storing.
Not sure what each job entails? Take a look at why they’re a necessity for you this spring!
STAINING
Has your deck been stained before? If not, it’s a must! Unfinished wood is subject to increased chances of mildew and fungus, as well as UV damage, cracking, greying, splintering and blotchiness. However, adding a sealant to the surface helps protect your deck from these problems, as thus increases its lifespan.
Staining your fence will create a more finished look to your backyard, as well as the added benefits of wood structure protection. Coordinate the stain of your fence to the stain on your deck for a more cohesive look to your overall backyard.
What kind of stain will you use for your deck and fence?
Depending on your outdoor aesthetic, you can use a clear sealer, a semi-transparent stain or a semi-solid stain. The clear sealer won’t change the colour of your wood, so if you prefer a natural look, the sealer will keep it intact while adding on an extra layer of protection. Interested in the semi-transparent stain? This gives a translucent appearance to the wood, allowing the natural colour of the wood to still show through. Finally, the semi-solid stain demonstrates a more painted look, but still will appear natural in an outdoor setting.
SEALING
Interlock or Pattern Concrete Sealing
With your interlocking or pattern concrete driveway, we urge you to add sealing to your maintenance list this spring. If your driveway is looking tired and old, sealing can fix it to look close to brand new again. There are many benefits to sealing, as it can help protect and increase the lifespan of your driveway.
What kind of stain will you use for your deck and fence?
There are three different looks you can use to seal your driveway. If you’re interested in a more natural look, you can choose the clear sealer, which will not change the appearance of your stone. The semi-gloss sealer gives a wet look, giving your stones that extra shine. Finally, the high gloss sealer gives a wet look, a highly reflective gloss as if it had just rained.
SEEDING
Grab those gloves and gardening tools because it’s time to get digging and planting! Whether you are planting a new lawn or rejuvenating your lawn from winter, spring is the perfect time as your seedbed is much less likely to dry out. Add a layer of seed to the thin areas of your lawn to get your property looking lush again!
STORING
Spring is the perfect time to clean out your garage, shed and any other areas which have become cluttered during the winter. Take a full inventory of what you have and what you need so you don’t purchase anything you have lying around or expect to have something when you don’t!
This is the right time to be productive and get motivated about changing up your home for the better.
